Contour Chair
Fall 2010 | Independent Study
The chair's unique shape is the result of a rigorous investigation into the nature of the human form. Design exploration began by studying research on ergonomics and hundreds of chair precedents. I soon realized there is little consensus on what makes a chair truly comfortable. Amidst many conflicting opinions, I focused on maximizing my own definition of comfort. Using a 3D laser scanner I created a digital surface that reflected my body's contours. This digital template was used to cut out a series of plywood strips that became the sitting surface of the chair. These strips were cut to exact specifications using a CNC router. As a result, the chair was a perfect fit!
